RANDOM REVIEW OF THE DAY: Some Like it Hot (1959)

There is no doubt that there are films that exist out there that focus on the sole purpose of setting up enjoyable characters along with good comedy and fast-paced jokes that keep coming, and it can be simple to believe that they can still turn out to be very good movies. Some Like it Hot is one of those movies. Directed by Billy Wilder, the movie tells the story of two funny but struggling musicians named Joe (Tony Curtis) and Jerry (Jack Lemmon) who witness a mob hit and have to leave the state in order to keep themselves out of trouble. They disguise themselves as woman and join an all woman band that includes its lead singer Sugar, played by mega female superstar Marilyn Monroe. Both men fall for Sugar and hijynx ensues. What makes this movie so memorable to most is the characters. What makes a good comedy is its wonderful cast of entertaining characters. Joe, played by Tony Curtis, is the usual smart aleck of the two but yet he is charming and he has his humorous moments. His partner Jerry, played by Jack Lemmon, is also the typical immature and more comedic of the two but he is also supportive of Joe and the audience can easily tell they are good friends. Sugar, of course played by Monroe, is very enjoyable to watch. Some may argue that she is not a very good actor and that she is only there for eye candy. To be honest this the only Marilyn Monroe movie I have seen as I am not that big of a fan, but judging from this film she is not too bad. I thought her acting was okay and it fitted the type of character she was playing. So all in all I really like these characters, they are very fun to watch plus they have good moments and the screenplay really helps them shine by delivering their lines and jokes with perfection. The story is nothing to get too excited about, but the events and hijynx that ensue to help this film prove itself to be a comedy are done well and perfectly set up. Finally, the romance between Joe and Sugar is well set up, as he does great trying to be a different person in order to impress Sugar and his humorous when doing it. But deep inside the character I knew that he truly was in love with her as she was in love with him. So not only the comedy, but the romance is done very well. Some Like it Hot can be considered to be one of the most likeable and funniest movies ever made with great moments, great characters, and great comedy. Everything seems perfectly set up and I can see why not only some like it but some love it. Grade: P+
