SELECTED REVIEW OF THE DAY: The Princess Bride (1987)

Known as one of the great fantasy movies, The Princess Bride is a film that is usually loved by people who have seen it. For it's 25th anniversary, I decided I'm going to review it. Even though I am not a huge fan of the film, but from the first time I saw it, I liked it. I think what I like most about it is that it is a fantasy film that entirely works. Let's face it fantasy is probably the HARDEST of all film genres to make good because there is only so much the filmmakers can get away with just because the film takes place far from our reality. Though it's a fantasy film, it does not have a lot of weird and silly fantasy cliches, and if there is any it is often used for a good joke. Another thing that works are the characters, all these characters are memorable and have their great moments. All of them have this charm and very likeable charisma to them. The comedy is also good, like I said before the film does do a goof job of turning fantasy cliches into good jokes but they do have a lot good character based jokes as well. Another thing I want to note is that I find it cute that the film is a story being told by a grandfather to his grandson and the film just focuses on those two, not much the boy's mom. I think they also set up a great relationship. All in all, The Princess Bride is a solid fantasy film that deserves to have its fans. Grade: P
