RANDOM REVIEW OF THE DAY: The Sound of Music (1965)

Regarded as one of the classic musicals, The Sound of Music is a beloved classic. It is also regarded as one of the most likeable films of all time. But what makes it so likeable? Well not only does it have a memorable and timeless story, but it has memorable and timeless everything. Characters, songs, and atmosphere. Julie Andrews as Maria von Trapp from the beginning is very likeable, due to Julie Andrews' performance and the film portraying her as a naive yet outgoing, free-spirited, and caring young woman. Though George von Trapp is more strict and insecure from the beginning, I felt I already enjoyed his character due to Christopher Plummer's performance of him and later on it is revealed that he can be caring and loving as he expresses it with music. The children are also enjoyable to watch, like a lot of children it is shown from the beginning they are going through a tough time and it is portrayed as a lot of children would act if they were going through a tough time. But when they are having fun, you can tell that they are happy and entertained. Though this was based on a true story, I have no doubt that music helped this family come close together as that was proven to be true, and the songs prove justice to that. These songs were written perfectly for each scene as they portrayed the events happening within the film at the right tone. Some may complain that this film maybe a little too joyous and happy, and I can see their point, but at the same time I personally think we need films like these in order for us to have a good feeling about the greater good of humanity. This is one of those films that perfectly represents that and it helps the audience escape and enjoy the setting and characters that the film gives to them. One of my favorite films and one of my favorite musicals. The Sound of Music is definitely one of the few of my favorite things. Grade: E
