RANDOM REVIEW OF THE DAY: The Muppet Movie (1979)

In their first ever motion picture, Jim Henson's Muppets, the stars of their then popular TV show "The Muppet Show, shine in The Muppet Movie. The Muppet Movie follows the always lovable Kermit the Frog as he decides to go on a road trip to Hollywood to become a famous star, as he takes along other aspiring talents and friends such as Fozzie Bear, Gonzo the Great, Animal, The Swedish Chef, of course his soul mate Miss Piggy, and lots of the other comedic Muppets. Nothing really huge or epic, but seeing the Muppets be their funny selves and while at the same time trying to accomplish a huge goal is quite entertaining. Everything a fan of the Muppets knows about these characters are fully represented in this movie. Even though they are puppets, somehow I still believed they were alive and interacting with each other and even interacting with humans. It was as believable as well, a human interacting with a human, or just believable as a human in general. But that's the magic of Jim Henson and his famous puppet workshop. His talent and the people he hires to help create these characters really help to make them seem so lovable, creative, and enjoyable to watch, and the fact that they are able to mingle with the real world is just so fun to watch. It really is hard to explain really, all I can say is because of this movie and many of the other Muppet movies after, I believe Kermit and his funny friends truly exist. One last thing that I feel that I have to touch upon is the main theme song of the film "The Rainbow Connection". Despite being in a Muppet movie and despite being sung by a green frog hand puppet playing a banjo in a swamp, this is...truly...one of the most beautiful songs...EVER WRITTEN! Some say it's too sentimental, some say it might even be depressing, but this is one of those special songs that really hits me in the heart. Not only does this song beautifully tell the story of how Kermit would one day meet the colorful friends he would have great moments with to complete his rainbow, but it also tells the story about someday when the world can be at peace and all the unique and colorful people of the world can finally be united in that rainbow because we can finally truly see what makes us a s individuals special. The song is SO good at being subtle about this message, when in the movie you may see it as Kermit's hope to meet fun and loving new friends but once you hear the passion within the song , the true message shines. Also it helps us to realize how we are so similar to The Muppets. It sounds weird, but in my opinion The Muppets represent the goodness inside of us and how different and unique we all are as individuals. The Muppets are different, unique, and lovable, and in turn we can be different, unique, and lovable if we wanted to. The Rainbow Connection seems to work because this movie connects to me, and I can be for sure certain that it will connect people and families. Grade: P+
