SELECTED REVIEW OF THE DAY: Batman: Mask of the Phantasm (1993)

In honor of the 20th Anniversary of Batman: The Animated Series, I will review the film based upon the series. Batman: Mask of the Phantasm was an animated film taking place in
the same universe. But at the time of its release it was a disappointing box office bomb. And to be honest, it didn't quite deserve it. It's actually a pretty underrated film as the Batman franchise goes. When most people think of theatrically released Batman films they either think of the ones directed by Tim Burton, Joel Schumacher, and Christopher Nolan. This film is unique because it actually has an original and interesting Batman story. Not just Batman films, but comic book films in general usually adapt a story from one or a few graphic novels or sagas. This one is original as well as engaging. The voices from the show, Kevin Conroy as Batman and Mark Hamill as the Joker, also help make these iconic characters come to life and you can tell through their voice they are completely in the role. Also there is a new character named Andrea Beaumont is not a famous nor iconic, but a very original and underrated Batman love interest. The Phantasm, the main villain, has great mystery behind this character and build up to the truth of this character is well-paced and well put together. Mask of the Phantasm is my second favorite Batman film because like the 1989 Tim Burton movie, it has fun with itself of being and entertaining and reality escaping experience. Even though it's animated, it does a great job of bringing the Caped Crusader to the big screen and it does true justice to both the character and his universe. If you haven't seen it, I highly recommend it, ESPECIALLY if you're a Batman fan. Grade: E
