Hotel Transylvania Review

I recently saw Hotel Transylvania. I didn't really have high hopes going into this movie. I thought to myself I already know what this is going to be. It's going to be Adam Sandler doing funny voices starring along side his favorite people Kevin James, David Spade, Steve Buscemi, (luckily no Rob Schneider), along with some tired fart, burp, and poop jokes for the kids, and some annoying pop culture references. As you can tell I'm a little picky when it comes to family movies, because the targeted audience for those is primarily children. I respect when studios produce films for family and children when the story and characters are timeless and the film respects the children because it knows they are smart. Childhood is the most crucial moment of a human being because that's the stage where their personality, knowledge, maturity, and interest start to shape and evolve. I absolutely hate when a family film thinks they are just making something for kids so they go to the lowest point of creativity with current slangs, pop culture references, and pop songs because they think that will keep the children's attention which I thought this film was going to be. Fortunately, I was wrong. This was actually a very fun family comedy movie with good jokes, good and memorable characters, and surprisingly good and well-paced story to keep it balanced. Now yes, it does contain pop culture references, pop songs, and as I recall one fart joke but to my surprise they all seem to work. Because not only does this movie satire the cliches of horror characters like Dracula and The Frankenstein Monster, but it also satires the cliches of the modern era. It's a film about what happens when two worlds collide and as a comedy it does well to exaggerate the incident and have fun itself. The animation for this film is really fun to look at. It is very energized and fast-paced and it has good jokes to go along with it to make it more enjoyable, but it is also nice when the film takes a break for crucial and story developing moments. Characters like Dracula, The Wolfman, Frankenstein, The Mummy, and the Invisible Man are all fun to watch as they don't act like they're stereotypical selves as most of us know them but like real people and real friends, plus they all have their own unique personalities and character traits which really makes the dialogue enjoyable when they are working off each other and cracking jokes. And it has a well-paced and good developed story to help us understand the characters more. Hotel Transylvania is a fun movie that all ages will enjoy. It's smart, satirical, nicely animated, funny, entertaining, and overall worth watching if there's a still a little amount of childhood left in you. Plus it's directed by Genndy Tartakovsky, the guy who made Dexter's Laboratory and Samurai Jack! I say give it a watch if you show some interest, you won't regret it! Grade: P
