HALLOWEEN REVIEW OF THE DAY: Poltergeist (1982)

Poltergeist, probably one of the most creepiest and traumatizing of all...family films. That's right this film is a family film. Well how family can it be with ghosts, scary images, scary ideas, and overall scary moments. Well family enough to get a PG rating but this was back in the 80s in a time before PG-13. The story follows the life of a normal American family as they find out that their house is haunted. Probably the best aspect of the film is the family. What makes them so great and entertaining is that they are a normal functioning family who happened to have this disaster to be thrown upon them and they react to these events in the same way how any other family if not a person would react. This is creepy stuff happening them and by the end these events force the family's life to have a drastic change. The best part of the film would probably be the second act where the youngest child of the family is taken away by the ghosts to there dimension where she is stuck. Like I said before the family reacts to this to a way how any normal family would react to a disaster like this. Not only is it entertaining but also heart-braking to watch this family suffer like this because we feel like we know these people in real life, and that's because we know people like them in real life, normal families. And to see them in trouble like this is gut wrenching, you wish throughout the whole movie things turn out okay for them. I got to say they got pretty good actors to portray this family. What also makes this movie look good are the effects. The visual effects for this movie is so good you actually believes these supernatural occurrences and hauntings are actually happening, the images seem like something not from this world and is a great representation on how we may see ghosts. Though the second act is successfully suspenseful and gut wrenching, the third act is a roller coaster because everything comes out of sort of a surprise. You know things are about to get real soon but you have no idea when. I truly love when horror films toy with your mind, because when your mind is puzzled the better chance the film has to shock and surprise you. Bottom line, Poltergeist is a very good horror...family film. Sounds weird but yes it shockingly works as both. It has the heart and wonder of a family film and the right scares of a horror film. Grade: P+
